Archive 2010/2011

At the opening of 2010/2011 a letter was sent to the local schools with an overview of the Rotary programmes applicable to each school. Communications have remained open throughout the year. While we offer a number of the schools a Principals Discretionary Fund none of these funds were requested for during the 2010/2011 year. In December a select number of Gungahlin students were presented with the Rotary Club of Gungahlin Community Service Award at their graduation ceremonies. The recipients of these awards were nominated by their Teaches and peers for an ongoing and outstanding contribution to the school community.

Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN) is an intensive two-day enrichment program for 14 to 17 year olds. Aimed to assist participants in forming their own values, moral standards and broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically while improving teamwork and leadership skills. Our first ever two sponsored students attended the September camp, both from Gold Creek senior. In May one further sponsored student from Gold Creek attended RYPEN. All three students spoke at our meeting to provide feedback and reported to have had a great time. We will continue to support this fantastic programme.

Two Club members assisted in the first ever Rotary Young Driver Awareness day in Canberra, seeing firsthand the running of the program. It was a fantastic day and an excellent program for our future young drivers. We hope to provide this programme at Gungahlin College next year.

The Youth Committee supported two students in their preliminary training and application into the National Youth Science Forum (NSYF). While neither of our proposed students was accepted this year, participation in the selections was “a credit to all applicants involved”. We have put forward one student for the 2011/2012 round of NSYF and we are awaiting the outcome.
