Thanks to Ian Sayers for this great presentation.
The Ranfurly Library Service is a charitable body devoted to the promotion of literacy in developing countries. It is named after Lord and Lady Ranfurly who had close family links with Australia. Whilst Lord Ranfurly was Govenor of the Bahamas in 1954, his young wife was appalled to find that many people on the islands had lapsed into illiteracy (after having learned to read at school) simply because they had no books. She appealed to friends in England and received a generous response. With gifts of books she was able to ensure the future literacy of the young people.
The Australian Ranfurly Library Service was established in 1986. It collects second-hand books from schools, libraries and individuals fro delivery, after sorting, to applicant schools, libraires, communities, welfare agencies and Rotary Clubs in PNG, the SW Pacific region and in special cicumstances further afield.
Literacy is a pre-requisite of effective health education, the development of public health programmes, the improvement of food production and the advancement of trade, technical and professional training. It has Tax Dedcutable Gift Recipient status.
